Matryoshka nesting dolls are iconic symbols of Russia and a marvel of folk art. The name “Matryoshka” derives from “Matryona”, a common name linked to motherhood and fertility, reflecting strength and family. These beautifully hand-crafted and hand-painted dolls nest inside one another, representing familial bonds. They are traditionally made from lime, birch, alder, or aspen wood. Trees are felled in spring, stripped of bark, and air-dried for two years. Skilled artisans use simple tools, turning each workpiece up to 15 times on a lathe to create these masterpieces, preserving a centuries-old craft.
